UN forecasts that in the next decades 33% of the population of developed counties will be over 60 years old while the fertility rate is 1.64 children per woman. Who will support the economy? “Developed regions will decrease if they were not counterbalanced by a net migration gain.” (UN) In which ways will you contribute to this? What is acting sustainably all about?
There is a great song from the Beatles, called when i’m 64, I listened to it the other day and started to think if I can at least imagine a picture of my life when i’m 64. Thinking about how your life would be when you’re 64 seems like a delicious task for the generation of visionary leaders that we are. However, given the issues of the world we live in, it might also seem ridiculous or pointless to even think about it.
MIT tells us that the world temperature will rise 5,6 degrees, which would mean that quite a few countries will have to put up with temperatures over 45 degrees Celsius. ILO (International Labour Organization) forecasts that 230 million people will lose their jobs due to the economical crisis. The war for talent the companies were carrying, gave us in the past the possibility to be picky, now, companies are the ones that get to pick leaving us with the responsibility to prove ourselves even more than before.
As a big fan of UN reports that I am, I read last week a pretty interesting press release  that was stating that most of us will reach 64. I don’t know if they’ll discover the cure for cancer in the meantime or how happily ever after we will live, but according to UN, we’ll reach our sixties. Globally, population aged 60 or over is the fastest growing and is expected to triple in the next 4 decades. More interesting, the oldest old (80+) is projected to increase 400%. Good news for us, retirement homes will feel like summer camps. Food for thought: who will take care of our dear economy, and therefore our pensions? In the developed world, it seems that not our kids.

AIESEC was founded on the basis of bringing peace to the world by cultural exchange. In 1948, the perspective of another war based on discrimination, provided us as organization with the motivation to act and achieve. 61 generations of ambitious young people have dedicated their passion and time to serve this cause.
Today, the problems of the world we live in are much more complex. We as youth of today have numerous reasons to act and achieve.The questions are, do we understand these reasons so that we can act upon them? Do we understand these reasons, so that we can act and plan sustainably on the long run? Can we forsee how big our impact can be when we dedicate our work to answering real needs of the world?
One of my biggest AHA moments was when I realized that I have the responsibility to contribute to the issues of the world I live in and as much, the issues of the world I’ll live in. For me, that’s what acting sustainbly is all about. Understanding the issues we’re confronted with, their dynamics in time, and acting today for today and tomorrow with the same intensity and commitment.
I chose to serve the mobility issue because I believe in a world without boundaries. I believe in building on differences. I believe in equality in rights and I believe we all should have chances to live our dreams regardless our citizenship. I believe in a world citizen that serves the needs and causes of the world, wherever there is a need.
I believe youth can find solutions to balance the population decrease of developed countries.
